On September 26, a month after the earthquake which hit Central Italy, the Embassy of Italy in Beijing presented to the Chinese press the charity initiative “A Future for Amatrice”, a global campaign raised by the Italian NGOs Slow Food and Terra Madre which the Italian Embassy and the Italian Chamber of Commerce in China immediately joined by creating a network of solidarity which now counts 57 participating restaurants throughout China.
“A Future for Amatrice” is an initiative which started in Italy in the aftermath of the earthquake which immediately spread all over the world, reaching also China. Thanks to the great generosity of the Italian restaurateurs it is already having a great success. “Today we are here to present the project and to raise awareness of one of the great dishes of the Italian culinary tradition” said the Ambassador of Italy to China, Ettore Sequi, “with the aim of promoting an important charity initiative through one of our strengths in the world: Italian cuisine”.
To explain to the Chinese public how the traditional recipe was born and how it actually tastes, the Embassy called some of the participating Italian chefs, from Beijing, Qingdao and Tianjin, who cooked for the public the famous “Spaghetti alla Amatriciana”.
The press conference was also attended by the President of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in China, Sergio Bertasi, which described how matured the idea to join the Slow Food project. In the audience, some Chinese private donors, who wanted to participate in the fundraising campaign through a personal financial contribution. Among these, the very first donor who delivered through the Embassy his expression of solidarity. In parallel with the initiative, the Embassy opened up also a bank account specifically dedicated to fundraising, possible until the end of November.
In the coming weeks the Consulates General of Italy in China will organize a presentation of the initiative to spread its knowledge as across China.
