Ambassador Sequi at the launching ceremony of Jeep Cherokee’s production in Changsha

The Italian Ambassador, Ettore Sequi, participated today in the ceremony organized by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) for the launch of the Jeep Cherokee’s production in China.

The ceremony was held in Changsha, capital of Hunan province, at the factory where the Jeep vehicle will be built.

"The project launched today confirms the image of Italy as a dynamic country with an innovative drive. It also shows the natural inclination of our production system to successfully operate in the international context."

The plant in Changsha is the result of a collaboration between FCA and the Chinese manufacturer Guangzhou Automobile Group Corporation (GAC), partners in a joint venture that dates back to 2010.

The value of the plant is 12.3 billion RMB (about € 1.7 billion). The production of the Jeep Cherokee in Changsha complements that of the Fiat "Ottimo" and "Viaggio" models developed for the Chinese market. The production capacity of the plant is 275,000 cars per year, including the Jeep Cherokee and Fiat models.

"The project of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in Changsha demonstrates the dynamism of an automotive group that can respond to the challenges of the global car market. The new investment by FCA in China is a show of confidence in the Chinese market," continued Ambassador Sequi.

"It also opens up opportunities for Italian companies in the automotive sector that are already present on this market or planning to enter it."

The FCA-GAC joint venture plans to assemble other Jeep models in China in the coming years: two new vehicles by 2016 and a comprehensive portfolio of SUVs for 2018. China has become the first market for Jeep outside the US, with sales that almost doubled in 2014 and should reach 3 million units by 2020.

With the project inaugurated today, FCA intends to take a leading role in the Chinese market, the largest in the world with 23 million vehicles sold annually. China is already the fifth largest market for FCA’s sales, thanks to the Jeep SUVs (previously only imported) and to the Fiat " Viaggio" and "Ottimo" models built in Changsha.

The ceremony was also attended by the President and CEO of Jeep, Mike Manley, the President of GAC, Zhang Fangyou and the Secretary of the Communist Party of China's Hunan Province, Xu Shousheng.
